Cumbria has something for everyone!
Appleby Castle owns the fishing rights on both sides of the River Eden immediately beneath the weir and this stretch of river has not been fished for 12 years. This is prime fishing territory and Trout, Grayling, Eel and the occasional Salmon are just some of the fish which abound in this special stretch of river.BOOK

APPLEBY GOLF CLUB – Brackenber Moor, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, CA16 6LP
Offering stunning views of the Pennines, Lake District and the hills of the Yorkshire Dales in the distance, it is easy to understand why Appleby Golf Club is such a popular course, with a membership of over 800 and large numbers of non-members flocking to play there on regularly. It is fabulously maintained and the greens benefit from free drainage offering virtually all year round playability. The one drawback is the lack of hazards on the fairways, as there are no bunkers for a start. It measures just under 6000 yards from tee on the first to pin on the last, but with no par fives and seven of the par fours being over 400 yards, the par 68 is not particularly easily achieved. The clubhouse has been expanded and improved over the years; now housing a bar, dining room, snooker room and sun lounge.
Would you like to take off in a hot air balloon from the grounds of Appleby Castle?
The best place to see Cumbria and Northern England is undoubtedly from the skies. From the air you will enjoy England’s most dramatic landscapes filled with Cumbrian mountains, the glorious lakes and the west coast. To the south lie the Yorkshire Dales, to the east wonderful towns like Richmond.
The area was a true inspiration for writers Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth – seeing these sights from the bird’s eye perspective of a hot air balloon over Cumbria might inspire you to put pen to paper too!ENQUIRE
Are there ghosts in Appleby Castle? Parts of the castle are over 900 years old and there are definitely spirits that walk the floors at night. There is a warm and friendly presence in the Castle and we have stories to tell for those that are interested.
Running through some of the most attractive scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Fells, the Settle-Carlisle Railway is world famous for its Victorian architecture, huge stone viaducts, long tunnels and remote wayside station buildings.
Cumbria offers a diversity of activities and is a paradise for walkers – no wonder The Lake District is the most visited National Park in the UK.
There are hundreds of options for walkers from riverside and lakeside strolls to challenging mountain expeditions. As well as Lake District walking, Eden also offers the limestone landscape of the Orton Fells, the beautiful River Eden, countryside and attractive villages of the Eden Valley, and part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Farmland and settlement add aesthetic value to the natural scenery and important wildlife habitats.
